Ferry to Holland with a 6m+ vehicle

Travelling to the Netherlands by ferry with a vehicle over six metres

This guide covers booking, vehicle sizing, check-in times, port procedures, the EU Entry/Exit System, and on-road requirements for large vehicles on the Hull to Rotterdam route.

Summary about this route:

This overnight ferry route connects Hull in the UK with Rotterdam Europoort in the Netherlands. All sailings include a cabin for the night crossing. After arrival, the drive from Europoort to central Rotterdam usually takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Before you book

  1. Select the correct vehicle type: car with caravan, motorhome, campervan, van or trailer.
  2. Enter exact dimensions: total length, width, and height, including racks, boxes, bikes, tow bars, air-con units, or antennas.
  3. Check ticket conditions for amendments or refunds if your dimensions change. (Avoid these kinds of changes; changing these things is difficult)
  4. Confirm insurance and roadside assistance cover for the EU, for all named drivers.
  5. A service check is recommended for towing vehicles and caravans, or for the motorhome itself.

Onboard parking

Before leaving your vehicle, switch off and secure all gas cylinders and appliances, and make sure roof vents and windows are closed. Disable the vehicle alarm after parking to prevent it from activating during the crossing. Finally, take note of the deck level and stair number or colour so you can easily locate your vehicle after arrival.

Disembarkation

Announcements will let you know when it’s time to return to your vehicle near the end of the crossing. Disembarkation usually begins about 15 minutes after the scheduled arrival. After leaving the vessel, pass through passport control and follow the exit signs for the A15 toward Rotterdam or your onward route.

Entry/Exit System EES

The EU introduces a digital border system to replace manual passport stamping for non-EU nationals entering Schengen.

  • The first trip after 12 October 2025 may include fingerprint and photo capture upon arrival at Europoort.
  • Registration is valid up to three years. Future trips typically require a quick biometric check.
  • Bring a valid passport and follow the port directions on arrival.

Caravan and motorhome pricing

If you are travelling with a caravan or motorhome on the Hull to Rotterdam route, fares are generally higher than standard car tickets due to the longer vehicle length and more weight  (typically about 30% to 50% more expensive). Prices also depend on the season, and cabin type.

  • Booking early is recommended, as space for large vehicles is limited on each sailing and the earlier you book, the cheaper it usually is.
